Mountain Bamboo
Look in this very valuable group to find hardy, clumping bamboos as well as clumping bamboos for warmer climates and interiors. These bamboos originate in the mountains of South and Central America, China and the Indian sub-continent and make excellent screens.
If you are in a northern state and need an evergreen screen that requires no control, the Fargesias, non-spreading bamboos, are perfect for you.The Fargesias are among the hardiest of bamboos and all are useful in shade; some in sun as well.
In warm states Borinda, Chusquea and Drepanostachyum, also non-spreading, are good choices. Himalayacamlamus prefers cool nights. This group of more tender bamboos are all excellent interior plants.
Some adventurous souls report that Borinda angustissima and Borinda boliana have done well in 100+F temperatures as have Fargesia denudata and Fargeisa robusta. Very good news for those in southern states who now have a variety of clumping bamboos available to them.

Borinda angustissima - A Chinese clumping bamboo with slightly arching canes and narrow leaves. First introduced from the Giant Panda Reserve in Wolong. The result is an elegant, tightly clumping bamboo suitable for screens or as specimen plants. This is one of the few screening bamboos suitable for the south as unlike many mountain bamboos this has done well in WV,VA,NC,SC,GA,AL,MS. Hardiness has been tested to only 7F. It might be lower. Makes a terrific container plant indoors where it is too cold for the garden. Gallon

Borinda
boliana - Giant Blue bamboo - One of the very few really large
mountain bamboos. Culms are widely spaced so one has a well controlled
and beautiful grove. Pale blue culms grow rapidly. An extraordinary
and rare bamboo that has become the favorite of those fortunate enough
to garden where they can grow it. Unlike many mountain bamboos this
has done well WV,VA,NC,SC,GA,AL,MS. I estimate it can be kept to
10-12 feet in a container as an interior plant. Gallom |

Borinda maccluriana - NEW - This clumping bamboo from Tibet, at elevations of 12,00 feet, the tallest of the Borindas, is certain to become a garden favorite. The color of the canes varies from pale gray to green and purple with very light green leaves. Grows to full height rapidly. We don't yet know enough about this bamboo to know whether it will do well in hot summers of the southern and the prairie states. The plants we have are full and vigorous. The photo does not show the red canes and light green leaves. Should make a great house plant. In a pot it will grow to about 6 -10 feet depending upon pot size and conditions. Rare and hard to find. Chusquea coronalis - One of the lovliest ofl the bamboos. As it is hardy to only about 25°F we grow it as a houseplant. It is a semi-tropical clumper from Central America with tiny leaves on branchlets that encircle the arching culms. I remember a beautiful specimen in a garden near Ft. Lauderdale. Maximum height in a container is likely six to eight feet. Excellent plant for the deep south. Gallon |

Fargesia
denudata - A clumping, hardy bamboo from China. The growth habit
is semi-weeping making it an excellent specimen plant or screen. The strongly
arching culms become a golden color with exposure to the sun. The leaves
are small and the branches are short giving it a delicate appearance.
Shoots come up in the spring and summer. This is a very valuable bamboo
in that it is hardy, clumping and one of the few Fargesias that can be
grown in full sun. Will tolerate 100+F.. Thanks to Ned Jaquith for the
photo. Plants are one gallon, about 4 feet tall. To order Fargesia denudata |

Fargesia
dracocephala
- DRAGON’S HEAD BAMBOO - A temperate bamboo from the Himalayas less
hardy (to -10°F) than the hardiest Fargesias, but much more tolerant
of heat; you can grow this one in the South as it tolerates 100+F. Grows
as tall as sixteen feet; an excellent choice for a site in shade to
open shade. Gallon, plants are about 3 feet tall. |

Fargesia
murielae
- A bamboo from the Himalayas with green culms. This shade-loving plant
grows more vigorously for us than the other Fargesias. New shoots come
up in late spring and summer. The culms become progressively more branched
each year and, as a result, more pendulous - hence a fountain-like growth
habit. Fine specimen plants - or use them spaced ten feet apart to make
a non-spreading screen. Evergreen in Zone 5 and warmer, but not for
hot climates, the South, Kansas, Oklahoma or desert states. We sell
new generation plants. Gallon, plants are about 2+ feet tall. |

Himalayacalamus
falconeri ‘Damarapa’ - CANDY CANE BAMBOO A Himalayan bamboo with
shoots that are red, yellow and green. The red fades as the culms mature.

Himalayacalamus
hookerianus - BLUE BAMBOO - Does well in part shade, deeper shade
in the South. What was called Drepanostachyum falcatum in this country
is in fact Himalayacalamus hookerianus. Whatever the name, it is the
lovely blue bamboo. How blue? The new growth has a blue bloom on the
canes. This gradually fades to emerald to a faint golden color. Maximum
height twenty feet; canes stiffly upright. Very good for low light.
Excellent interior plant. Not recommended for the deep south and prairie
states. Gallon |
